4 Tips to Avoid Over-Indulging this Christmas

How on Earth are we so close to Christmas? I swear as you get older the countdown gets shorter.

Not helped by the fact that I keep forgetting to open my advent calendar..

It’s the season for indulging and treating yourself and whilst some people will completely let go of their diet ready to continue again in January, others want to maintain their plans over Christmas.
Yep, I’m the second one. Who’s idea was it to start my six pack goal of 2018 4 weeks early?!

Here are 5 tips to help you avoid over-indulging this Christmas and to keep on top of your fitness and diet routines.

1. Eat your calories – don’t drink them all

There’s a lot of alcohol and sugary drinks floating around during the holidays. With parties and family gatherings it’s easy to lose track of how much you’re drinking.

That doesn’t mean to say that you should stick to water at your work Christmas party. But swapping in a slice of fruity Christmas cake or mince pies will keep you fuller for longer and build up your calorie intake, rather than using them up with a few fancy cocktails!

2. Wait before going back for another helping

I need to remember this one all year around…

It can take your stomach a while to realise it’s full. And even longer for that message to reach your brain. So before going up for a second helping, sit back and relax. Have a chat for a while.

You might realise by the time you’re done that you’re not as hungry as you thought you were.

3. Maintain your workout routine

It’s easy to get lazy during the holidays, particularly if you have time off of work. Make sure to keep up your workout routine to avoid those unwanted holiday weight gains.

You’ll probably find that it’s quieter at your gym at this time of the year – everyone is at home over-indulging. You already have a head start for the new year!

4. Keep up your water intake

Make sure you’re still drinking lots of water. With all of the good food and drink around it’s easy to forget to drink water. Drinking lots of water will also help to flush away those holiday indulges you’ve already given in to!

Keep track of how much water you’re drinking and make sure to be drinking at least 2 litres a day – more if you’re exercising.

Most importantly..

Don’t overthink it. That Christmas song is right, this is the most wonderful time of the year. So more importantly than any of these tips, enjoy yourselves. Spend time with your families and make the most of it.

Merry Christmas.
